The Story of the Production:
We will produce Hedda Gabler with an ensemble consisting solely of Black performers who identify as German and whose lives are informed by a migration/refugee story, which may either be part of their own experience or that of their parents or way in past. It is our goal to develop an awareness in the social majority for a fact that is often dismissed as a minority problem: That large parts of the population because of their skin color or origin are excluded from cultural/artistic, and therefore also social and political participation. At the same time, we want to empower people who due to their cultural, ethnic, or social background are not included among the usual theatergoers.
As starting point for our artistic work on the Hedda Gabler material we plan to workshop in Berlin in August/September 2016. Under the direction of John Gould Rubin we will work on the text to develop a detailed production concept, which includes consideration of current discourse on identity, belonging, discrimination, migration, and integration. At the conclusion of the workshop we will present preliminary results of our work in the form of a public reading. Subsequently, we plan a panel discussion with renowned artists and cultural workers, followed by a conversation with the audience. |
